In Defense of Sea Monkeys as House Pets

Allow me to present to you an alternative to the common house pet. I by no means wish to discriminate against the companionship of the canine or feline, however, if you have some hestitation when faced with the life-changing decision of obtaining a house pet you may wish to consider the alternative of the sea monkey. My husband insists that house pets will take away our liberty to travel on a whim, drain away our petty cash with the purchase of vaccines, pet chow, and obedience school, but even he could not contend with the decision to allow sea monkeys into our home.

What, you ask, is a sea monkey? Sea monkeys are a variety of artemia salina or brine shrimp. In an amazing process called crytobiosis the larva of brine shrimps are preserved un-hatched so that you can hatch them in the privacy of your own home and watch them grow!

Here are some of the attributes of the sea monkey:

1. The cost as little as 5 dollars plus tax and can be bought at your local Walmart supercenter.

2. No need to buy food or give vaccines! Included in the box is the food and habitat you need to house your growing sea monkeys. Just place them in a sunny window and marvel.

3. They require very little attention. When done properly the sea monkey will create it's own food because the little tank makes its own algae which in turn nourishes your fledging sea monkey.

4. Sea monkeys are tiny and hard to pet but they are cute and offer hours of entertainment as they swim in their tank like little acrobats.

5. You can leave them for days unattended once they have hatched and they will survive without permanent damage to their psyche.

6. Once they are grown they will reproduce on their own and you will see an endless life cycle.

7. They live about as long as gold fish so if you get tired of them no need to panic. If they die, they simple go to the bottom of the tank and turn into algae. No need to bury them or flush them down the toilet.

So, should you choose to follow in the footsteps of thousands of happy sea monkey owners keep those attributes in main and enjoy your quest for the perfect pet!

Join me next time when we discuss the scintillating topic of: Shrabs! Do they exist? What kind of dangers do they pose to mankind?

First of all, Shrabs do exist! There are photos to prove it.

As for sea monkeys, they sound like great pets, but Fuzzy is still the best.
